FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)
Team 10989 competes in FIRST Robotics Competition, designing, building, and programming a full-size robot each season to compete regionally.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is the flagship program of Blast Robotics. Each January, teams around the world receive a new game challenge and have six weeks to design, build, program, and test a robot capable of competing in it — then head to regional and district competitions to put that robot to the test.
What our students actually do
FRC is often described as “the varsity sport for the mind,” and for good reason. Over a single season, our students rotate through:
- Mechanical design & fabrication — CAD modeling, machining, and assembly of the competition robot
- Programming & controls — Java/WPILib-based robot code, sensor integration, and autonomous routines
- Strategy & scouting — analyzing opposing teams and planning match strategy at competition
- Business & outreach — sponsorship pitches, technical documentation (engineering notebooks), and community presentations
That last category is why FRC teams like ours often out-punch our rookie status — award panels weigh documentation and outreach as heavily as raw robot performance.
Our first season, by the numbers
Since our May 2025 founding, Team 10989 has:
- Registered and built a competition-ready robot in our rookie season
- Won the Rookie All-Star Award at the Centennial District Event (March 2026)
- Won the Rising All-Star Award at the Philadelphia District Event (April 2026)
- Partnered with veteran team FRC 1168 Malvern Robotics for mentorship
Who can join
FRC is open to high school students across the Mainline, PA area — no prior robotics, coding, or engineering experience required. Many of our strongest programmers and mechanical leads started with zero background in either.
